06/01/2010 - Detroit, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jake Westbrook pitched 7 2/3 stellar innings to lift the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game AL Central series at Comerica Park.

Westbrook (3-3) allowed one run on five hits for Cleveland, which won for only the fourth time in its last 15 games. Shin-Soo Choo and Russell Branyan both homered in the victory.

Jeremy Bonderman was solid in his eight-inning start, but suffered the loss for the struggling Tigers, who have dropped eight of their last 10 games. Bonderman (2-3) was charged with three runs on nine hits.

Miguel Cabrera posted two hits and scored for the Tigers, who left the tying run at third base in the final inning.

Kerry Wood got the first two outs of the ninth before Carlos Guillen reached first base on a fielding error by Branyan. Brandon Inge then walked, which brought the potential game-winning run to the plate in the form of Alex Avila. After fouling off several pitches with a full count, Avila ripped a single into the right field and Guillen scored to cut Detroit's deficit to 3-2.

However, with runners on the corners, Wood settled down and got Ramon Santiago to fly out to left field for his third save of the campaign.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the second inning. Cabrera led off with a double and scored on a base hit to center field by Guillen.

Branyan's seventh homer of the season led off the fifth and tied the score.

Bonderman was reached again in the next frame when Choo's one-out blast cleared the wall in right field for a 2-1 Indians lead.

Westbrook set the Tigers down in order in the bottom of the sixth before Bonderman escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh that prevented the visitors from adding to their lead.

Once more in the bottom of the seventh, Westbrook was perfect.

Cleveland added an insurance run in the eighth via Mark Grudzielanek's single. Travis Hafner was hit by a Bonderman pitch with one out, moved to second on a base hit by Jhonny Peralta, advanced to third on a fly out by Branyan and scored on Grudzielanek's 11th RBI of the season.

The Tigers had runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. After Westbrook walked Johnny Damon to create the first-and-third situation, he was pulled from the mound in favor of Chris Perez, who induced an inning-ending foul out off the bat of Magglio Ordonez.

Game Notes

Earlier Tuesday, the Tigers traded left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-hander Billy Buckner. Willis was a two-time All-Star selection in his days with the Florida Marlins and also won the 2003 NL Rookie of the Year award. Willis landed in Detroit as part of a 2007 trade that also included Cabrera...Bonderman fell to 8-10 over 22 career starts versus Cleveland...Despite the loss, the Tigers have won 10 of their last 12 home contests against the Indians.

In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.

Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.

Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.

Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.

That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.

Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason.
