Americans sweep foursomes for huge Presidents Cup lead

09/29/2007 - Montreal, QC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The American side won all five points in Saturday morning's foursomes matches to take a commanding lead at The Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal.

The Jack Nicklaus-captained U.S. team leads the Internationals 12-5 with plenty of golf still to go. There are five fourball matches Saturday afternoon and 12 singles matches on Sunday for Gary Player's side to make up some ground.

This marked the third time in seven Presidents Cups that the U.S. has swept a session and the second time in foursomes. In the previous two occasions, the Americans went on to capture the Cup in resounding fashion.

The American tandem of Hunter Mahan and Steve Stricker took the first match, 2-up, against Rory Sabbatini and Trevor Immelman.

One day after taking a dip in a lake by the 14th fairway and birdieing the final three holes to earn a tough halve, Woody Austin partnered with Phil Mickelson to trounce Retief Goosen and Stuart Appleby, 5 & 4.

Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk rebounded from a drubbing on Friday. They handled the International tandem of Ernie Els and Adam Scott, 4 & 3.

Scott Verplank and Lucas Glover scored something of an upset in the fourth match. They bested local hero Mike Weir and Vijay Singh, 2 & 1.

In the anchor match, the U.S. team of Masters champion Zach Johnson and David Toms defeated Nick O'Hern and Geoff Ogilvy, 2 & 1.

The U.S. took 10 1/2 points out of a possible 11 in the two foursomes sessions. The Internationals won 4 1/2 out of six points in the fourballs, so nothing is guaranteed for the U.S.

"We have to keep our guard up, keep playing and keep going," said Nicklaus. "I better just let them go. These guys are big boys, they know what they're doing."
